XO’s Wine of Choice for the Festive Season
As we approach the end of the year thoughts turn to the Melbourne Cup, plans for Christmas and New Year’s celebrations and nothing says celebration like opening a bottle of Sparkling wine. Many will opt for the Sparkling wines of Champagne. These still provide the benchmark however now more than ever the prestige sparkling wines from Australia are proving a perfect choice.
Regionality is so important in producing quality sparkling – think cool climate, altitude, well drained soils and mild summers. Tasmania is leading the charge with wines consistently judged to be winners. Clover Hill, Jansz, Stefano Lubiano and Josef Chromy are all great examples. The Adelaide Hills, Macedon, King Valley and Yarra Valley all produce top rated bubbles with familiar names like Chandon and Croser. The quality produced, often at better price point to their French counterparts, make them a great choice for your next celebration.
Look out this summer for the newest old style of Sparkling – pet nats. Made in the ancestral method there are few rules in making these hard to get, drink now wines. Partly cloudy, textural and always fun these wines are made without the addition of yeasts and sugar and in small batches. Each one is a unique expression of the grape and the time it was bottled. Enjoy!
